Today, my hip feels locked up. After several years of not exercising enough, nursing and carrying my daughter around, I’ve been noticing this for awhile and I’m finally back into a great workout routine that has made it much better.
But this week, I let it go too long. I prioritized business when I had time away from my family. My husband was traveling and we had a new babysitter, which reduced my usual “me-time”.
It’s tough, sometimes, being on planet earth with choices to make. In spirit, there are no limits, yet in the body and in “real life,” there are. Being more aware just highlights this gap!
Last night, I was behind on my sleep and went to bed with my daughter at 8 pm. That is so lovely when I do it! Yet as tired as I was, I couldn’t sleep. My achy hips distracted me and I was hyper-aware that I’d gone several days without exercising. So I stayed up late again and am tired again today, and even though I worked out, my hip still hurts. It’s going to take me several days to get back into it. Oops!
I share this because I know so many of you go through similar stuff. I see it when my students miss classes or slide on their meditation practice. When clients have trouble finding a time for the sessions they deeply need. If you hit these blocks, I feel for you.
What I have learned though is whatever we think is MORE important than self-care will be BETTER if we do our self-care. Half the time I stay up too late working, I need a nap, or I am just less productive the next day– and in either case there was no benefit to staying up! When I’m rested, things just flow.
At one point last year, I meditated in the middle of the day instead of my preferred morning time. That was how our childcare schedule was set up, and I guess it was my experiment to see if I could just start my day like a “normal person”- LOL. After several months of this, I realized that while I could function just fine, I had a much higher “vibration” when I meditated at the beginning of the day.
I told my husband I needed an hour to myself every morning and we switched it. Wow, the difference in my energy each morning is profound. Since then, I feel “ON” instead of like I’m just getting through the time.
Truthfully, I often only meditate for 20 minutes. My favorite days are when I take a 35-minute power walk in a nearby park, and then meditate there for 20 minutes. Sometimes I meditate for the whole walk, and other times I answer emails or dictate affirmations or business ideas while I walk. I feel what I need each day.
The point is: to get OUT of my usual environment and mental chatter and tasks. That is where I get my best ideas. That is where I find appreciation for all that I have. That is where I have my “a-has” and see a larger perspective on my life.
I start my day connecting with myself, my body and purpose, and then I find I am more creative and able to respond. Otherwise, I can feel pulled by everyone and everything around me, and it just takes more work to stay centered. It can be done, but why make it harder for ourselves?
One of my clients is an entrepreneur at a critical stage in building her business, and she let the long hours compromise her health. For her, I saw that time at the gym or an un-structured walk with her business partner was not only good for her body, it could be one of her “secrets” to success!
Another client is separated from her husband, and yet has trouble going an hour without texting back and forth with him. I saw clearly that creating more space would clear up the confusion she felt in her relationship!
Ladies, this can also make you more attractive (it’s the energetic version of playing “hard to get”, yet because the goal is self-love, it’s not a game). In fact, in the middle of our healing session just after I separated her energy from two important people in her life, they both texted her!
Another client had a loved one with a serious illness. She was very worried (understandably) and the worry was so palpable, I’m sure it spilled over to anyone near her. Difficult as it was for her, I knew in my bones that her taking care of herself was KEY to supporting her friend.
Have you ever noticed that when you take a trip, you’re forced to open up and get clearer on your life? Or how good it feels to reunite with your lover after time apart? How much more productive and magnetic you are after some time off having fun?
If you know you need more self care and aren’t sure where to start… or if you know you need support to motivate you, you’re human!
