Have you ever wondered if you could talk to your family members who have passed over? Do you ever sense ghosts or spirits that spook you? Feel comforted by a presence or voice, when no one seems to be around?
When most people think of mediumship, they think of these types of abilities, and imagine that few people have these gifts. Or, if they have these experiences, they keep them quiet because they’re a little scary or because no one is talking about them.
In fact, just as we all can breathe, we are all mediums. How else would we be born, die or dream?
Mediumship is not just the ability to bring another spirit into your room or body. You are spirit, and most of the time (hopefully) you are channeling yourself.
Answer these questions and see how strong your mediumship is. Do you often experience…
- Feeling spaced out?
- Tapping into some energy larger than your own, perhaps in times of creativity or spiritual practice?
- Sugar, caffeine, alcohol or other cravings or addictions?
- Your energy changes easily or radically– especially when you get triggered or when you’re not well nourished and grounded? For example, do people close to you say they never know what mood you’ll be in, or that sometimes you just don’t seem like yourself?
- You feel pressure at the top of the neck/ base of the head?
If you answered, “yes” to all or most of these, you have a very high level of mediumship ability! But how come nobody told you, and what does this have to do with talking to your dead ancestors?
Most of the world denies that spirit is real. For you, this may sound far-fetched, but consider how many children are told they have an “imaginary friend” when they see someone who is “not there”? Most of us were programmed on a subtle level to subdue our powers.
From the point of view that we are spirit, our bodies are like the house we live in. We can come and go at will, and many of us come and go unconsciously all the time.
When we are born, that’s like moving into our house. From there on out, except in severe cases like certain mental illnesses, your body is your very own house. No one else owns it, though you may have a visitor here and there, and it’s probably the most frequent place you spend time.
Every night, when our bodies sleep, it’s like we (the spiritual beings we are), take a field trip and go explore the world. There are no limits. We can wander around our neighborhood (this is like having a dream in which we process our daily life); we can travel at light-speed to other galaxies and dimensions, or anything in-between.
When we wake up, we return home. Of course some people have trouble with this, and power up with coffee or just start the day grumpy and “out of it.”
Many people have a hard time staying spiritually present in moments of emotional intensity, physical pain, or even boredom. This I see as a “low” level of mediumship—the person left his body but didn’t know what he was doing.
When we leave our “house”, especially if we weren’t aware and left the door open, others can come in. Who comes in and what happens when they do depends on the energy in the house.
If we leave our house a mess (e.g. if we don’t take care of our bodies, which by the way includes our minds), we attract homeless people (ghosts or lost souls). If we’ve been angry we attract angry beings, and if we’re feeling creative we attract artistic beings.
Most artists do some degree of channeling. That is, at least part of their awareness leaves their body when they paint, act, make music, or write. As they step out, the creative spirits come in and create something bigger than the artist. This is the key to some artists’ mastery!
For those of you interested in channeling spirits for the purpose of healing, my best advice is to keep your energy up, think positive thoughts and take great care of your body. The more you can feel what it’s like to be in your body, the more confidence and clarity you’ll have stepping out. And when you sparkle with light and love, you’ll be most likely to attract spirits who have only your best interests at heart.
When you know you are spirit, it’s easy to see that not all spirits you hear from are wiser than you!

About our ancestors—yes, they are around and in general they are pretty easy to talk with. Just imagine they are around, and notice what impressions you get.
Right after my grandfather died, I sat down in meditation to speak with him. As soon as I “dialed his number” so to speak, I heard him answer as if he was answering the phone. Same tone of voice and everything!
Hours after my grandmother passed, she swung by to say hi but showed me she wouldn’t stay long. She was making her rounds visiting everyone she loved and kissing us all on our cheeks.
Right before my grandmother died, my partner and I went to visit her. We told her we wanted to have a baby, and asked her to pray for us. She responded, “Oh, I love my babies…” and less than a month later, we were pregnant!
Coincidence? I think not. In most cases, our ancestors will help us when we ask, even after they have already passed away.
I find it fascinating that just as our culture mostly denies spirit (though this is changing), we also give little attention to birth and death—the major times when we enter and leave our bodies.
Yes, of course most people get excited about a new baby, but how many talk to the spirit and consciously conceive? How many fear birth, remain ignorant to their own power and just do what the doctors tell them?
When I went to my grandfather’s funeral, I remember how sad and serious everyone seemed. I felt a little guilty but all I could feel was joy and peace—what a great, long life he’d had, how went out quickly without suffering, and how content he was on the other side.
I guess if you can sense the energy of a spirit, especially one you’ve known, it brings reassurance that spirit is real. That you are real, and more than your body.
The real challenge for most of us is not to channel another spirit. It is to love our bodies, to bring ourselves as spirit fully in, and to live our greatest potential within this physical world. If you’re curious how to do that, check out the offerings at www.FloweringSol.com.
