Do you want to learn to meditate, or even know you need to meditate, but can’t seem to get it off the ground?
Either you can’t focus; or you don’t know what to focus on; or you get caught up in email, phone calls, work, chores around the house, family, you
name it– and before you know it the day is gone?
I started meditating in 1990, and from 1998 to today I have not missed a day. How do I do it?
For me, it makes more sense to ask, “How could I not do it?” Because I have 14 years of proof that it works for me, and have seen life with and without it, I’m completely convinced! I really miss it if I haven’t done it by evening.
But I also know that convincing a new meditator that they’ll love it just because I love it is like convincing someone who eats canned Spam they’ll feel great eating fresh, local foods.
Until you try it yourself, you just don’t know! I also know how it is to start and stop and get distracted, so I’d like to share a bit of what I’ve learned.
You may wonder, what changed in 1998 that made me stick to it every day, after 8 years of inconsistent practice?
Here’s what it was:
- I finally got frustrated enough with my life. I was feeling stuck, and seemed to be wasting a lot of time anyway analyzing my feelings, weighing all my options, judging myself and not taking action. Too often, I felt like I was in a cloud and somehow, I knew there was another way to feel.
- I found a style of meditation that worked for me, better than anything I’ve tried so far. Now, everyone is unique and there are many benefits to any kind of mediation. For me, I had such an active mind that I needed to give it something to do beyond counting my breaths. And I was already so spiritually oriented (or, you could say I was a bit “spaced out” :), that I needed a meditation to help me connect with my body. Visualizing my aura (energy field) expanding to the size of the Universe was fun, but it didn’t help me when it was time to go to work or make daily choices—which I needed!
The style of meditation I began daily in 1998 is the basis of what I teach now. By now I’ve put my own spin on it, but it incorporates simple visualizations that help you clear energy, circulate energy and feel good your body. And everyone I teach can do it!
If the whole concept of energy seems kind of woo-woo to you, consider how it feels when someone stands a little too close to you in the grocery store line. Or how you think of someone and then they call. Or how it feels to sit in the gridlock of rush hour traffic. We all feel energy!
If you’re getting stuck and can’t seem to get started, here are my top 3 tips:
If you can’t focus…
Let go of thinking you have to get it perfect. If you are focused 10 seconds of every minute, that’s 10 seconds you aren’t worrying, doubting or spacing out—and they add up!
One minute of appreciation can cancel out tons of negative thoughts, so do your best and the benefits you receive will inspire you to do more next time. Rather than pushing yourself, this way is easier and will actually help you get quicker results.
If you don’t know what to focus on…
It really helps to have a teacher, class, or audio to guide you. I even listen to my own meditations sometimes when I’m stuck (and that alone gets me laughing)!

If you can’t seem to find the time…
Try this for one week: Write down how many hours you spend unhappy or struggling. Write down how many things went wrong. Write down all the things you did then had to redo, all the wrong turns, all the things that backfired, etc…
I’m not asking you to do this to beat yourself up. It just helps to see how much time you’re already spending being stuck. If you could only give 5 of those minutes each day to meditation, you’d be more present and happier and I bet you’d struggle at least an hour less. Try it and see– I bet you have more time than you think!
